* New students without basic knowledge of Chinese language must learn IGE 002 (Foundation Chinese).
This subject is not included in the total number of credit units the student is enrolled in and their grades will be either "S" (Satisfactory) or "U" (Unsatisfactory). If a student obtains a "U"(Unsatisfactory) grade, he/she must re-enroll for this subject again until he/she finally obtains an "S" (Satisfactory) grade. Students with basic knowledge of Chinese language can take the equivalent exam for IGE 002 (Foundation Chinese). Once the student passes, he/she will be given an "S" (Satisfactory) grade and he/she need not enroll in IGE 002 and need not enroll in any other Chinese foundation courses in the future.
**New Students in the Department of English-Chinese with basic knowledge of Chinese Mandarin can take an equivalency test for Chinese subjects with double asterisks. Once the students passes, they need not enroll in that subject and they will be given an "S" (Satisfactory) grade. However, they should enroll in extra Chinese subjects later to obtain the required number of credit units as prescribed in the curriculum. The students can choose from Chinese major subjects or from the subjects listed below.
